For the appreciation of special themes and occasions

Since 2016, five themes or occasions selected annually by the Federal Government have been recognised with 20-euro commemorative coin. Each of the five German mints are therefore commisioned annually with the minting of one of these coins. The predecessors of this series were the 10 and 20 euro collector coins that were released from 2002 to 2015.

For special occasions, all five mints produce a sixth coin with the same theme (2006: FIFA World Cup, 2009 World Championship in Athletics, 2011: FIFA Women’s World Cup). The 10 and 20 euro collector coins are prized collector items and furthermore legal national tender.
